Which utility to call first

Check the name on your water and sewer bill; the map has exceptions.
| Area | Sewer service | First call for a backup |
|---|---|---|
| Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, Loris | The city’s own utility | Your city |
| Surfside Beach, Garden City, Socastee, Carolina Forest, Forestbrook, Little River, Longs | GSWSA | (843) 234-8460, or (843) 443-8200 after hours |
| Murrells Inlet | GCWSD | (843) 546-8408 after hours |
| Atlantic Beach | Not run by the town | The utility on your bill |
| Briarcliffe Acres | Mostly septic; 11 parcels on City of Myrtle Beach sewer | The City of Myrtle Beach, if on sewer |
GSWSA’s rule is “Call GSWSA before you call your plumber,” and it investigates at no charge. GSWSA’s 2023 map also shows a zone southeast of Conway with city water and GSWSA sewer.
Who issues permits
South Carolina’s 2021 residential code treats replacing concealed sewer pipe as new work needing a permit and inspection. Horry County issues permits in unincorporated areas, the cities and towns generally issue their own, and Georgetown County covers Murrells Inlet, where the residential permit fee on an $8,000 job is $75.50. Briarcliffe Acres requires town approval before the Horry County permit. We pull it either way.
Septic areas
Most homes in Briarcliffe Acres use septic systems, and GSWSA’s Rural Sewer Program offers rural owners a connection instead. NRCS rates 97.8% of Horry County’s rated soil acreage “very limited” for septic drain fields. See septic line repair.

Storm and flood exposure
Hurricane Florence (2018) sent the Waccamaw River at Conway to a record 21.16-foot crest, and raw sewage flowed from the Conway Wastewater Treatment Plant into a tributary of the river. A station near Loris recorded 23.63 inches of rain, a South Carolina tropical cyclone rainfall record. On the coast, Hurricane Ian’s 2022 surge breached the dunes in Garden City and left upwards of three feet of sand on South Waccamaw Drive (National Weather Service). After a flood, a camera inspection shows any damage to your line.

Service area FAQ
Which number do I call first when sewage backs up?
Your utility, before a plumber: GSWSA at (843) 234-8460, GCWSD in Murrells Inlet, or your city in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway and Loris. If the problem is on your side, call us.
How do I know which utility serves my home?
Check the name on your water and sewer bill. Annexed parcels and private subdivision systems can differ from GSWSA’s service-area map.
What is different about Murrells Inlet?
It is in Georgetown County and on GCWSD, which makes owners responsible for the sewer line from the home to the property line and the water line from the home to the meter. Georgetown County issues the permits.
Do you cover places not on the list?
Call (843) 429-6659 with your address and we will say whether we cover it.
