What does GCWSD make Murrells Inlet owners fix?

Two lines. GCWSD’s service line brochure tells property owners they are responsible for all repairs to the water line from the home to the water meter, and to the sewer line from the home to the property line. It adds that most homeowners insurance policies do not cover those repairs.

The district lists aging pipes, tree roots and seasonal changes as causes of broken and clogged service lines; we clear clogged ones with sewer line cleaning.

Sewage backing up? Call GCWSD first

Call GCWSD before any plumber, us included. After hours its emergency line is (843) 546-8408, where an answering service pages on-call staff; the Pawleys Island office is (843) 237-9727. Under its protection plan terms, a customer who calls a plumber before calling GCWSD pays the repair bill.

Until someone checks, stop running water, keep children and pets away from sewage and never mix chemical drain openers.

GCWSD’s Service Line Protection Program

This optional plan covers water and sewer lines from GCWSD’s system at the road right-of-way up to the outside wall of the building. It excludes private grinders and pump stations, septic tanks, natural disasters, sewer lines over 4 inches and water lines over 2 inches. Joining during a break costs $100 and commits you for three years. The 2022 brochure listed $2.00 a month for water, $4.00 for sewer or $6.00 for both, plus $0.50 per additional unit; ask GCWSD for the current price.

That disaster exclusion matters here: during Hurricane Ian in 2022, Murrells Inlet logged the lowest pressure in the National Weather Service’s observation table, 978.7 millibars, and a 68 mph gust. Our sewer line insurance guide compares plans and policies.

Georgetown County permit fees for sewer work

Georgetown County, not Horry County, issues permits here under the 2021 residential code with South Carolina changes. Its residential fees:

Georgetown County feeAmount
Permit, first $1,000 of value$30
Each added $1,000, up to $50,000$6.50
Example: an $8,000 sewer repair$75.50, before any plan-check or impact fee
Plan check, if value tops $10,000 or plans are requiredHalf the permit fee, minimum $30
Re-inspection$100
Work started without a permitPermit fee doubles

The schedule also lists a Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District impact fee of 0.2% of value for renovations; ask the Building Department (843-545-3116) whether it applies to a sewer repair. We pull the permit, book the inspections and list every county fee on your quote.

Murrells Inlet homes and their lines

Housing here is young: the median Murrells Inlet home was built in 2002, 24.9% in 2010 or later and only 7.9% before 1980, and 16.0% are mobile homes (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). Lines that age are usually PVC, so failures tend to be sags where trench backfill settled, separated joints, roots at fittings and pipe cut by later digging.

What happens when you call from Murrells Inlet

  1. We confirm GCWSD has checked its side, camera your line and mark it on the ground; SC811 covers public utilities only, so the camera’s locator finds your private line.
  2. Our quote is written and itemized: camera findings, method, length and depth, Georgetown County permit and fees, locates, restoration and disposal.
  3. The job is done by licensed plumbers, covered by liability insurance, and we meet the county inspector.

Murrells Inlet sewer FAQ

Is Murrells Inlet served by GSWSA?

No. Census maps put the whole Murrells Inlet community in Georgetown County, where GCWSD supplies water and sewer. GCWSD’s own plan terms name other local utilities, so check whose name is on your bill.

Does GCWSD’s protection plan cover my grinder pump?

No. The plan excludes private pump stations and grinders, plus the private force mains that serve them, so a grinder pump repair is the owner’s to arrange.

Where is the sewer cleanout on a Murrells Inlet home?

Lines built to GCWSD’s standard detail have a 6-inch cleanout in a concrete collar in the road right-of-way, a 4-inch cleanout at least 5 feet from the house and others every 75 feet or less on straight runs. Our camera’s locator finds buried ones.

What does GCWSD charge to connect a new sewer service?

Its 2026-27 rates brochure lists a sewer impact fee of $1,893 per residential unit plus a $120 sewer service administrative fee. Water service fees are separate.

Do I need a permit to fix a leak in Murrells Inlet?

Not to stop a leak or clear a stoppage. Replacing concealed pipe is new work that needs a Georgetown County permit and inspection, and after an emergency repair the application is due by the next working business day.
