Myrtle Beach Sewer Line Repair repairs sewer and water service lines in Little River, where the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority (GSWSA) supplies water and sewer and treats wastewater at its Vereen plant in Wampee. Many homes here are condos, apartments or seasonal homes, and recent storms brought a tornado and more than 15 inches of rain. If sewage is coming up, call GSWSA first; for the pipe on your side, call us.

Call (843) 429-6659 if your Little River drains are slow, gurgling or backing up.

Who provides sewer service in Little River?

GSWSA does. Its 2023 service-area map shows GSWSA water and sewer in Little River, and its 7 million-gallon-a-day Vereen plant, running since late 2003, serves Wampee, Little River and Barefoot Resort.

Vereen also treats wastewater from part of the City of North Myrtle Beach, which runs its own water and sewer system, so the plant alone does not tell you whose pipe is in your street. Check whose name is on your water bill. For GSWSA customers, the standards put a cleanout at the property line, and the pipe from there to the building is generally the owner’s.

Little River condos and seasonal homes

The Census Bureau’s ACS (2020-2024) counts about 11,800 residents and 8,351 homes in the Little River census-designated place. Of those homes, 36.0% are in buildings with five or more units and 24.1% are seasonal or recreational. The median home was built in 1996, and only 6.4% before 1980, so most lines are likely PVC or ABS rather than cast iron or clay.

In a condo, your unit’s drain usually joins a shared line before it reaches GSWSA’s lateral, so tell your HOA or property manager about a backup as well as GSWSA. In a home that sits empty for weeks, a slow water line leak can run unnoticed.

Storms, power outages and backups in Little River

NWS Wilmington records that during Hurricane Dorian, “an EF1 tornado struck Little River at 4:37 a.m.” on September 5, 2019. Tropical Storm Debby dropped 15.61 inches of rain on Little River in August 2024, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.

GSWSA’s storm advice is to “flush your commodes only when necessary until the storm passes.” Some GSWSA homes rely on an individual pumping unit, such as an Environmental One grinder pump, rather than a gravity line. A typical unit holds about 70 gallons and will not pump without power, so keep water use low in an outage. Report an alarm at a GSWSA pump station to (843) 234-8460.

Our guide to flood sewer backups covers cleanup after a storm.

What happens when you call

After the utility. Once GSWSA has checked its side of a backup, active backups go first on our schedule.

The camera. We inspect the line from a cleanout and mark the problem’s location and depth on the ground. In a condo, the video shows you and the HOA where the failure is.

The quote. It is written and itemized: findings and video, method, pipe length and depth, permit and inspection, locates, restoration and any cleanout added. We pull the permit, request SC811 locates and schedule the inspection.

Little River FAQ

Who do I call first if sewage backs up in my Little River home or condo?

GSWSA, at (843) 234-8460, or (843) 443-8200 after hours. Its rule is “Call GSWSA before you call your plumber,” and its staff investigate backups day or night at no charge.

Does flood insurance pay for a sewer backup in Little River?

Only for one kind. FloodSmart says an NFIP policy covers damage from a sewer that backed up during a heavy rainstorm, but not from a backup caused by clogged pipes.

How do I know if my Little River home has a grinder pump?

You will usually see an alarm panel on the house and a lid over a pump tank in the yard. Ask GSWSA who owns and maintains your unit before any repair, and cut water use whenever the alarm sounds.

My Little River address says North Myrtle Beach. Is my sewer GSWSA or the city?

Check your water bill. North Myrtle Beach runs its own water and sewer, and its 2018 comprehensive plan says land west of the Intracoastal Waterway is served by GSWSA unless the city has annexed it.

How do I protect the sewer in a Little River home that sits empty?

Run water in every drain when you arrive, or have someone do it during long absences, so traps stay full and keep sewer gas out. Shutting the main water valve before you leave limits leak damage.

Do I need a permit for an emergency sewer repair in Little River?

Yes, if pipe is replaced; clearing a stoppage needs none. For an emergency repair, South Carolina’s residential code requires the permit application by the next working business day, and in unincorporated Little River we file it with Horry County Code Enforcement.
